About Nancy Thomas
A prominent member of the therapeutic parenting field, Nancy Thomas wields more than 30 years of direct experience in working with at-risk children. Nancy Thomas identifies symptoms of youth who have been affected by abuse, neglect, or mental disorders, and encourages their healing and rehabilitation from the violent and disturbed behaviors associated with traumatic experiences. Sharing her child development expertise with parents, caretakers, teachers, and medical professionals, Nancy Thomas founded Families by Design, an educational resource addressing attachment disorders. As part of her goals for the organization, Nancy Thomas educates the public on attachment, bonding, and other behavioral issues that may be affected by Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). From Families by Design’s headquarters in West Colorado, Nancy Thomas leads several seminars that assist parents in coping with troubled children and provide the skills needed to improve behavior. Nancy Thomas has also collaborated with therapists, developing long-term training sessions for these professionals whose studies and practices handle youth with mental disorders. In addition to her work with Families by Design, Nancy Thomas has contributed to several field publications, including her own parenting guide, When Love is Not Enough: A Guide to Parenting Children with Reactive Attachment Disorder. Nancy Thomas has also produced five training videos aimed at helping families provide love and assistance to their emotionally and psychologically wounded children. One of the world’s most renowned experts in attachment disorders, Nancy Thomas lectures at a variety of venues all over the world. Nancy Thomas entered the field as a Therapeutic Parenting Specialist in 1974. With extensive experience working directly with troubled children, Nancy Thomas served as a Professional Therapeutic Parent for The Youth Behavior Program for a decade beginning in 1985. Nancy Thomas has partnered with well-regarded attachment therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists as a co-therapist and secondary lay-therapist. A parent of birth children, adopted children, and numerous foster children, Nancy Thomas has nurtured bonding and well being for many youth with severe emotional disorders. Nancy Thomas’ second-chance successes have been highlighted in the 1990 HBO special, entitled Child of Rage.
