About Ms. Susan Sachs

Ms. Susan Sachs leverages her extensive experience in a broad range of international affairs toward her current role as a freelance reporter and journalism professor at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po). Covering subjects from politics to the environment, Susan Sachs's articles have been featured in publications such as The Straits Times, The Christian Science Monitor, Time, More, and The South China Morning Post. In addition to teaching and writing, Susan Sachs edits manuscripts for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.


Prior to her current endeavors, Susan Sachs served as a Foreign Reporter for The New York Times. Operating as the Istanbul Bureau Chief, the Baghdad Bureau Chief, and the Cairo Bureau Chief, Susan Sachs traveled throughout the Middle East. Among her accomplishments was an investigation and subsequent exposé on corruption within the UN Oil-for-Food Programme. Over the course of her professional career, Susan Sachs has also reported for The Economist, Newsday, The Miami Herald, and The State Journal-Register.


Since embarking on her career, Susan Sachs has been honored with a variety of awards and recognitions. Susan Sachs’ Newsday series “Reading, Writing, and Hate” won recognition from the Overseas Press Club as the best newspaper or wire service interpretation of international affairs. Susan Sachs was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for “Key West: Smuggler’s Island,” a series on the drug smuggling and corruption in the Florida Keys that she wrote as a member of The Miami Herald's investigative team. Susan Sachs was also awarded the Investigative Reporters and Editors top prize, the Sigma Delta Chi Green Eyeshade Award for Excellence, the Florida State Bar Association Excellence in Legal Reporting award, and the Women in Communications award.


Susan Sachs matriculated at the University of Michigan, from which she earned her Bachelor of Arts in American Studies and Environmental Education. Committed to academic excellence, Susan Sachs consistently demonstrated the tenacity and dedication to her craft that would become a hallmark of her later career. As such, Susan Sachs was awarded numerous fellowships throughout her professional career.
