About Mr. Steven Sater

Since completing the English literature graduate program at Princeton University, Steven Sater has become an award-winning playwright and lyricist, television and screen writer. His first musical Umbrage, a collaboration with creative partner Duncan Sheik, enjoyed a long run at the off-Broadway venue HERE Arts Center. Their second venture, Nero, premiered at the Magic Theatre in San Francisco, California, and was subsequently seen in workshop development at the Powerhouse Theater of Vassar College.

Sater and Sheik’s most visible production is the Broadway sensation Spring Awakening. Based on German playwright Frank Wedekind’s 19th century story, Spring Awakening was named Best Musical by the Outer Critics Circle, the Drama Desk, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle, and the Drama League Awards. Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik also received Tony, Grammy, and Laurence Olivier Awards for their music and lyrics, as their modernized, rock-influenced story of teenage rebellion and self-discovery become an international success.

Since Spring Awakening, Steven Sater has begun production on many new creative projects, including an updated rendition of Prometheus Bound with System of a Down musician Serj Tankian. Steven Sater has also created two television pilots with Paul Reiser for NBC and FX networks, and is currently scripting a new version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for Sony Pictures. Sater also recently wrote two songs for Michael Mayer’s film A Home at the End of the World.

Steven Sater currently resides in Los Angeles.
