About Mr. Shereef Akeel
Mr. Shereef Akeel received national attention when he brought a class action lawsuit against CACI International, Inc. and Titan, Corp., two American companies hired to aid in the interrogation of detainees at Abu Ghraib and other detention centers. In 2004, a former detainee approached Shereef Akeel to defend him, saying that he suffered torture and abuse while in the prison. Shereef Akeel’s work, together with other reports of abuse, supported an investigation headed by an Army Major General; this investigation found that the two agencies had encouraged and participated in the abuse at Abu Ghraib. Well known for his civil rights and discrimination work with Arab Americans, Shereef Akeel is also involved in the defense of civilians who were attacked without provocation by Blackwater mercenaries. Shereef Akeel first became involved in civil rights law when discrimination against Arab Americans dramatically increased after the September 11th tragedy.
Before becoming involved in personal injury and civil rights law, Shereef Akeel focused on property insurance and contract law. A Certified Public Accountant, Shereef Akeel joined Melamed, Dailey, and Akeel in 1996. Shereef Akeel holds a Master of Business Administration from Wayne State University in addition to his Juris Doctor from Michigan State University’s Detroit College of Law. In addition to being named a Michigan Super Lawyer for four years running and a Lawyer of the Year by Michigan Lawyers Weekly in 2004, Shereef Akeel has received the President’s Award from the Center for Constitutional Rights and the Defender of Freedom Award from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Shereef Akeel is a member of the Michigan State Bar and has been invited to speak at events hosted by ICLE, the Michigan Association of Justice, and the State Bar of Michigan.
