About Mr. Shereef Akeel
Mr. Shereef Akeel has been a partner at Akeel & Valentine PLC since 2005, specializing primarily in civil rights and personal injury law while also handling business litigation. A Certified Public Accountant, Shereef Akeel holds a Master of Business Administration from Wayne State University and a Juris Doctor Cum Laude from the Detroit College of Law, now the Michigan State University College of Law. Before Akeel & Valentine PLC, Shereef Akeel served as a partner at Melamed, Dailey, and Akeel where he specialized in business and finance law. After the tragedy of September 11, 2001, a Yemeni man who unduly lost his job after the attack approached Shereef Akeel. Inspired by this man's story, Shereef Akeel shifted his focus to civil rights law and discrimination cases against Arab Americans.
In 2004, Shereef Akeel began to work with Abu Ghraib torture victims when a former detainee asked Akeel to represent him for abuse suffered at the hands of American contractors hired by the United States Government. In 2007, this work culminated in a class action suit filed by Shereef Akeel against CACI International, Inc. and Titan Corp., two agencies hired by the United States Government to provide translation and interrogation services in Abu Ghraib and other detention centers. Shereef Akeel has also received national recognition for representing the Blackwater shooting victims who were attacked by heavily armed mercenaries without provocation. Shereef Akeel has been working on this case with representatives of the Center for Constitutional Rights, including its President, Michael Ratner.
Shereef Akeel has been invited to speak at a number of engagements, including the Annual Conference of the Michigan Association of Justice, on local and national civil rights issues. For four years running, Shereef Akeel has been recognized as a Michigan Super Lawyer.
