About Mr. Matt Vasgersian

Over more than a decade, Matt Vasgersian has become one of the most recognizable personalities in sports television. Known for his spirited commentary and quick wit, Matt Vasgersian now appears regularly on MLB Network’s MLB Tonight, as well as on the network’s Thursday Night Baseball.


Matt Vasgersian’s debut as a play-by-play announcer came in 1991 covering minor league baseball with the Chicago Cubs class-A affiliate in Huntington, West Virginia. Matt Vasgersian first announced for a major league team in 1997, when he joined the Milwaukee Brewers. In 2002, Matt Vasgersian moved to the San Diego Padres, where he remained through 2008 before joining the MLB Network.


Though he began as a baseball announcer, Matt Vasgersian’s talent and versatility have seen him as lead play-by-play man for coverage of the NFL on Fox and three Olympic cycles with NBC (Athens, Torino, and Beijing). Though his work is now known on a national level, Matt Vasgersian's trademark "Santa Maria!" call remains popular in Milwaukee and San Diego


Matt Vasgersian graduated from the University of Southern California, where he was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Communications. In his free time, Matt Vasgersian hosts an annual celebrity poker tournament, raising generous sums for various causes each year.
