About Mr. Albert Melino
A graduate of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Albert J. Melino earned distinction for his work with the New York Police Department before becoming an insurance fraud investigator. He now heads AJ Melino & Associates, Inc., a New York private security firm that serves many world-renowned celebrities and international corporations. Both his background in police work and fraud investigation were instrumental in Melino’s decision to join AJ Melino & Associates.
As part of the Manhattan District Attorney Homicide Investigation Unit, A.J. Melino helped bring down several notoriously violent New York gangs in the 1990s. After retiring from the department, A.J. Melino sought a way to apply the skills he had honed in law enforcement and undercover investigations to a new context.
A.J. Melino began working as a special investigator for State Farm Insurance in 1999 and then for Auto One Insurance in 2002. In these roles, A.J. Melino was responsible for investigating suspected insurance fraud.
Insurance fraud requires a good deal of investigative prowess and creativity. A.J. Melino’s fraud investigations involved searching through national databases, performing background checks, finding ways to uncover evidence on suspected fraud cases, and training employees to detect fraud.
Fraud prevention, moreover, is an important and meaningful aspect of the insurance industry, one that helps keep insurance premiums down. Injury and workers’ compensation fraud are some of the more common types of fraud, and they are also among the most problematic. People who collect fraudulent injury benefits not only cost money to insurance companies; they also stop contributing to the economy or to their families. Furthermore, psychological studies have shown that disability incentives, if not safeguarded by strong anti-fraud measures, can actually prolong the recovery time for those that are legitimately injured.
A.J. Melino’s work as a fraud investigator broadened the range and scope of his investigative skills and gave him experience in the private sector. Coupled with A.J. Melino’s police background, this fraud-prevention experience allowed him to take the helm of the security firm AJ Melino & Associates, which has become one of the top event security firms in the country.
