Mohamed Shawky was an indispensable member of Al-Ahly team when they won the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League in 2005 and 2006. In 2006, the club with their powerful defender, Mohamed Shawky, finished third and won the bronze medal at FIFA Club World Cup.
On August 31, 2007, he signed a three-year contract with Middlesbrough, an English Premier League football club. On September 26, 2007, he got his first opportunity to play for the club in a match against Tottenham Hotspur in the third round of the Carling Cup. His performance was brilliant when Middlesbrough won 1-0 in a match against Portsmouth that was played towards the end of the 2007-08. Despite sustaining injuries in his first year at the club, Mohamed Shawky recovered and managed to become a reliable starter for his side in the 2008-09 season. He played in the central midfield position at the opening Premier League game of the 2008-08 season for Middlesbrough, which won 2-1 against Tottenham Hotspur.
