About Mike Alleyne
Mike Alleyne - Professional Summary:
As a teacher, Mike Alleyne works diligently to share his knowledge of popular music and the current music industry at large. Currently, Mike Alleyne teaches at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), which made him a full Professor in 2009. Before starting at MTSU in 2000, Professor Alleyne taught humanities and popular culture courses at Florida A&M University (FAMU). In the early 1990s, he wrote freelance music reviews for newspapers. He also provided voice-overs and original music for radio and television shows in the late 1980s.
Professor Alleyne has a great deal of international teaching experience. He was a part-time instructor in Barbados, where he taught the Fundamentals of Written English in the Linguistics department and West Indian Literature and Modern Prose Fiction in the university's English department. He taught at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago, which deemed him a Distinguished Cultural Studies Lecturer and Scholar-in-Residence in 2005. More recently, Professor Alleyne brought his expertise to Europe, both in Sweden (2004 and 2007) and Germany (2010 and 2011).
Mike Alleyne received his Ph.D. from the University of the West Indies in Barbados in 1996, titling his dissertation, The Transnationalisation of Caribbean Music: Capitalism & Cultural Intertextuality. He earned his B.A. from the same institution and was the valedictorian of his class. Over the years, Professor Alleyne has produced many articles on the music industry as well as lectured and presented on the same subject, both in the United States and abroad. Though he is currently writing The Encyclopedia of Reggae, he is interested in many different genres and artists. He is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP); the Performing Right Society (PRS); and the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM). Music is not Professor Alleyne’s only love. He also developed a passion for football while growing up in North London and currently enjoys the exciting contests of the English Premier League.
