About Michele A. Basso

 

Michele A. Basso - Professional Summary:    Michele A. Basso, Ph.D., serves as Director of the Fuster Laboratory in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of California, Los Angeles’ (UCLA) Semel Institute for Neuroscience. In this capacity, she currently focuses her research on basal ganglia and its effects on the cognitive process. In addition to her role as Director of the Fuster Laboratory, Michele A. Basso also acts as a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. 

Before beginning her present employment, Basso spent 12 years as a professor and affiliate scientist at the University of Wisconsin. She taught and conducted research for the Department of Neuroscience and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. She has also been invited to speak at conferences at prestigious universities throughout the world, including the National University of Singapore, Université de Montréal Quebec, and the University of Toronto. Recently, Michele Basso presented research on cognitive processes and movement related to Parkinson’s disease for the National Institutes of Health.

Michele A. Basso earned both her Doctorate and Master of Arts in Behavioral Neuroscience from Stony Brook University in New York. Shortly after graduation, she conducted a fellowship with the National Eye Institute at the Laboratory of Sensorimotor Research in Bethesda, Maryland. Before completing her graduate degrees, Basso attended Fairfield University in Connecticut where she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. 

Outside of work, Michele A. Basso supports nonprofit organizations that provide affordable and accessible health care to women and promote human rights. She also serves as a volunteer for a domestic violence crisis hotline.
