About Michael Tarr

An intellectual schooled in semiotics and anthropology, Michael Tarr has both studied and lectured on modern communications and their effect on the human mind. This has led him to create a theory based on visual language modular objects (VLMO), a new development in the communication field that relies on patterns in order to convey certain knowledge to viewers. Michael Tarr explains VLMO in terms of non-linear representations through mediums such as television and the internet. These representations may include sequences where rather than showing a continuous action, the viewer must connect various images in order to understand the passage of time as one example.

In his studies of VLMO, Michael Tarr has deduced that contemporary media and other large-scale global communications infrastructures provide such a relentless barrage of information that they fail to communicate the full depth of meaning and the viewer uses "filters" of media cliches to manage their intake of media. Hence, people view everything in terms of patterns and objects. This explains how people formulate an opinion set to which they can become irreversibly wed, making it very difficult to have discourse on seemingly intractable problems such as homelessness, drug addiction, obesity. Michael Tarr theorizes that Tea Party Politics, as an example, is a demonstration of political experts understanding the reductive elements of modern media and that contemporary individuals prefer encapsulated information and imagery because it fits within their already edited media framework and does not disturb the viewers' sense of reality or identity.
