Michael Tanner Cusumano’s film "Sage" won the Best Film Noir Award at the 2010 Burbank International Film Festival, and his most recent film "Amanda" garnered him more acclaim. This movie, which deals with the important topic of teenage drinking and driving, won several awards including Best High School Film at the 2011 Santa Clarita Valley Film Festival, the Award of Merit at the 2010 Los Angeles Cinema Festival of Hollywood, an Honorable Mention at the 2011 Metropolitan Film Festival of New York City, and the Rising Star Award at the 2011 Canada International Film Festival. "Amanda" was screened at almost 20 national and international film festivals.

While he focuses on his extracurricular film pursuits, Michael Tanner Cusumano also attends Sierra Canyon School, a private high school with a strong emphasis on the arts. He serves as the director of the school’s annual film festival. Having participated in five summer programs at the New York Film Academy, Cusumano also spent last summer at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts.
