About Michael Garcia

Throughout his standout career, former Colorado State Representative Michael Garcia has served his community in Colorado in a myriad of ways. Dedicated to the advancement of all people, Michael Garcia has committed his life and work to advocating for fair immigration policies, health care reform, and the enhancement of the democratic process.


Michael Garcia holds both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Political Science. Michael Garcia was awarded a Graduate Fellowship by the American Political Science Association while attending the University of Arizona. After earning his Master’s, Michael Garcia acquired his first experience working in public policy through a fellowship from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI). With this fellowship, Michael Garcia interned as a Legislative Assistant for Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz in the U.S. House of Representatives and the 27th Congressional District of Texas.


First elected as a Colorado State Representative in 2000, Michael Garcia was reelected for the next three terms, fulfilling eight years in office as an elected official. Michael Garcia represented House District 42 and served as a delegate on several international missions, taking him all over the world to advance cross-cultural understanding and communications. Michael Garcia traveled to Taiwan on behalf of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office Mission of Midwestern States Legislative Leaders to the Republic of China. Additionally, Michael Garcia’s took him to Russia on an American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL) Educational Mission. Other issues on which Michael Garcia concentrated his efforts while in office included fiscal accountability, health care reform, and appropriations. Michael Garcia also served as the Chair of the Interim Committee on Long-term Health Care Services and Supports to Persons with Developmental Disabilities.


Michael Garcia was able to balance his duties as State Representative with his job as Coordinator of the Youth Council for Public Policy, a non-partisan organization dedicated to increasing young people’s exposure and interest in the democratic process through empowerment and mobilization.


Currently, Michael Garcia serves as the Special Projects Manager at Metro Community Provider Network (MCPN) in Englewood, Colorado. MCPN is the largest provider of primary health care services to uninsured people in the community. In addition to operating several community health centers, MCPN coordinates hospitals, physicians, and community partners to ensure the reliable delivery of specialty care services to residents who are medically underserved. Michael Garcia applies his years of experience working in government to his role with the organization as he enhances its advocacy efforts by meeting with elected officials and drafting literature and as he develops the MCPN Specialty Referral Network Phase II business plan.
