Matthew Upson is an English footballer, who was born on April 18, 1979 in Hartismere, Suffolk, who plays as a defender in the central position.


Matthew Upson made his international appearance in 1998 playing for the England Under-21 national team and has scored two goals. He was chosen to be a part of the England senior squad in 2002, for which he made his debut against South Africa in May 2003. On January 31, 2008, Matthew Upson was named in Fabio Capello's first provisional England squad for a friendly match versus Switzerland in February that year. He was a member of the starting eleven in his 8th England cap and has represented the senior national team in nine games as of August 2008.


Matthew Upson kicked off his football career as a trainee at Luton Town in 1994. In April 1996, he signed professional terms with the club and made his senior team debut against Rotherham United in August that year. After completing one season with Luton Town, he moved to Arsenal in May 1997 for £2 million. Matthew Upson went on brief loan stints to Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace in the 2000-01 season, and on his return to Arsenal the following season, he made 22 appearances. He won the Premier League winners' medal twice (1998, 2002) during his tenure with the club. After recovering from an injury, he was loaned out to Reading in September 2002 for three months.


Months after his loan stint with Reading, Matthew Upson signed for Birmingham City in January 2003. He met with an injury while practicing for a local derby against Aston Villa in April 2006, due to which he missed the rest of the season. After recovery, he came back into action and scored a goal in the club’s win over Plymouth Argyle in December. He made 113 appearances for the club scoring five goals during his four year association.


Matthew Upson signed a four-and-a-half year deal with West Ham United in January 2007. He made his debut for the club against Aston Villa, following which; he played the full ninety minutes for West Ham in its match versus Manchester City on August 11, 2007. Later that month, he made his maiden appearance as the team’s captain in the club’s win over Birmingham City. He scored his first goal which was also the winning goal for West Ham against Manchester United in December 2007. Matthew Upson has played in 33 matches for the club as of August 2008.
