Matthew McCullough, nicknamed “mattboom”, is a 34-year-old poker player from Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Predominantly an online player, McCullough is often seen playing at Bodog, and it is through Bodog that he participated and impressed all at his first and only live tournament appearance.

A Team Bodog player and a nurse anesthetist by profession, Matt McCullough won a satellite event on Bodog that earned him a handsome winner’s package worth $36,000, which included a trip to London, airfare, 10-night hotel stay and a £10,000 buy-in at the World Series of Poker Europe main event in London.

At the £10,000 No Limit Hold'em main event at The Empire, up against 361 other entrants and a prize pool of approximately $7,404,476 to play for, McCullough played a patient game, not allowing the occasion or his accomplished competitors to intimidate him. As he climbed his way up through the field, he knocked out veteran poker pro Phil Hellmuth, an achievement that by his own admission gave him a lot of satisfaction,

Matthew McCullough made the final table as the chip leader, knocking out another poker legend, Gus "The Great Dane" Hansen, in the process. The only American remaining in the event, the Jersey native remained patient as other finalists fell by the wayside. McCullough eventually finished third and won a staggering $769,065 in the process.
