Matt Derbyshire, a striker with Blackburn Rovers, was born on April 14, 1986 in Blackburn, England. In February 2007, Matt Derbyshire was called up to the England Under-21 squad for the match against Spain. He scored England’s third goal leading to a thrilling draw in the Under-21 match against Italy at the New Wembley stadium in March 2007.


Matt Derbyshire made his foray into the world of football and played for his school, Our Lady and Saint John. At the age of 15 he caught the attention of the manager of the youth team of Darwen F.C. who asked him to join the team. He later went on to work for Blackburn Rovers on their community scheme as a coach for schoolchildren in the locality.


In 2003, when he was a part of Great Harwood Town F.C., he was signed by Blackburn Rovers after scoring 18 goals in 9 appearances. Matt Derbyshire was loaned out to Wrexham F.C. in 2004-05. He had a remarkable first season with 9 goals off 10 games.


Matt Derbyshire opened his goal tally in the 3-0 win against Wigan Athletic F.C. in January 2007. He went on to extend it in the 4-1 win over Everton F.C., an English football club based in Liverpool, in the FA Cup. Matt Derbyshire featured in the starting line-up for the first time at the English Premier League against Arsenal F.C., later that month. His impressive form with Blackburn Rovers continued as he went on to score two goals against Luton Town F.C., in the 4th Round of the FA Cup, brushing them aside 4-0. Matt Derbyshire won the ‘Man of the Match’ title and became an overnight star among fans. His term with Blackburn Rovers was also extended till 2010 subsequently.


At the 2008 English Premier League, Matt Derbyshire scored the winning goal in the team’s 2-1 victory against Middlesbrough in the first match of the season.
