About Marianne Vos


Marianne Vos, born on May 13, 1987 in Wijk en Aalburg, Netherlands is a Dutch cyclo-cross, road bicycle racer and track racer. She currently resides in a village of Babyloniënbroek. Her career started at the age of six, after being inspired by her brother who was also a cyclist. Marianne Vos was trained in her brother’s team until she was eligible to participate in races. She also underwent training in cyclo-cross during the winters. At the age of eight, she was able to participate in races. She also participated in the speed skating and inline speed skating. When she was 14 she replaced inline skating with mountain biking.


In 2002, Marianne Vos won the title of mountain biking (junior) and road racing (junior) events of the Dutch National Championship. In the 2003 Dutch National Championship, she defended her winner title of the mountain biking (junior) event. In 2004 Marianne Vos won her first international championship in cyclo-cross in Gieten, and continued her winning momentum in cyclo-cross events held at Surhuisterveen and Pijnacker-Nootdorp. She won the Dutch Junior Champion title in mountain biking for the third time before taking part in the junior road world championships. She was elected as the Sport FM Sportswoman of the year at the end of the season.


The year 2005 proved to be successful for Marianne Vos where she won titles of many cyclo-cross and mountain bike races. This victory list includes her win in the European Championship in cyclo-cross. She was once again awarded with Sport FM Sportswoman of the year 2005 title.


Her 2006 wins consisted of two Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) World Championship titles in road race and cyclo-cross, and a bronze in the UCI European cyclo-cross championship. On June 28, 2006, Marianne Vos was named Dutch Sports Talent of the year 2006 for her excellent performance in various races held in that year.


The 2007 season began with her first-place finish at the UCI Women's Road World Cup. On May 15 2007, Marianne Vos was made the leader of the UCI women’s ranking. In the year 2008, Marianne Vos competed in the Points Race at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships held at Manchester. This was her first rack event and yet she won the gold medal for her stunning performance. After winning the 2008 track racing event, she became the first woman to have the world championships in three cycling disciplines, namely road, track and cyclo-cross.


Marianne Vos took part in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing with an objective to win three gold medals in the cycling events. She won the gold medal for her outstanding performance in the Olympic Points Race Championship at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.


As of 2008, Marianne Vos is playing for the DSB Bank team. Marianne Vos is an ambassador for Youth United for Srilanka (YU4SL), which works for the underprivileged people of Srilanka.
