About Margie Shabat
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Margie Shabat spent her childhood and early adult life in New York City. Ms. Shabat received her primary and secondary education at Jewish schools in metropolitan New York. She attended the Shulamith School for Girls and the Samuel H. Wang Yeshiva University High School for Girls, both in Brooklyn. Afterwards, Ms. Shabat attended Machon Gold, an Orthodox Jewish seminary for women located in Jerusalem, Israel.
After returning to New York City to attend Brooklyn College, Margie Shabat worked at the Council for Jewish Manpower in Manhattan. In 1977, Ms. Shabat and her husband moved to Chicago, where she worked as a secretary for Howard Packaging LLC, a decorative bag and gift-wrap company based in Lincolnwood, Illinois. Ms. Shabat currently works for Da’as Management and is a Partner in S & E Supply Company in Skokie, Illinois.
Since relocating to the Midwest, Ms. Shabat has remained active in the Jewish community. She is a regular supporter of Chicago-based Jewish charities, including the local branch of Bikur Cholim, a nationwide Jewish organization that cares for the infirm and elderly. Ms. Shabat takes seriously the religious duty of bikur cholim, which in English means “visiting the sick.” Having struggled with illness herself most of her life, including having breast cancer twice, Ms. Shabat feels immense compassion for the physical and emotional struggles that accompany long-term illness.
A mother to two adult sons, Ms. Shabat enjoys traveling and spending time with her family. In her spare time, she likes to remain physically active by swimming and biking. Margie Shabat enjoys writing and started her own blog in 2010. MOMChicago is written mostly by Ms. Shabat, but also occasionally has guest posts from other authors. Her ultimate goal in writing is to assist and encourage others to cope with and overcome their struggles.
