About Marcelo Kuperschmit

Marcelo Kuperschmit - Professional Summary:

Marcelo Kuperschmit, MD, FACS, a surgeon practicing in the Reston/District of Columbia/Arlington area, is best known for his work in laparoscopic hernia procedures that reduce pain and recovery time compared to traditional surgeries. Formerly the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Dr. Kuperschmit was the first doctor in the state to perform a laparoscopic cholecystotomy (removal of the gall bladder).

As opposed to traditional open hernia work, Marcelo Kuperschmit’s minimally invasive operation uses a miniature video camera inserted in the patient’s body through a small incision. The camera shows the affected area to the surgeon, who can then operate through the same incision. The small size of the incision greatly reduces the amount of pain the patient feels after the operation, sometimes allowing him or her to go home the same day. After performing over 1,000 of these procedures, Dr. Kuperschmit has found that 1 week is sufficient for full recovery.

Dr. Kuperschmit executes two types of laparoscopic hernia surgeries, one with a balloon and one without. The balloon, inflated inside the body, allows Marcelo Kuperschmit to visualize the entire hernia, which is not always possible in traditional methods. Dr. Kuperschmit has demonstrated that in nearly all of his procedures, the hernia does not recur; reoccurrence happens in 10 to 13 percent of open hernia operations.

Marcelo Kuperschmit was born in 1949 in Argentina and earned his MD in 1972 at the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine. Following medical school, he served his residency in general surgery at the university’s Fernández Hospital. After moving to the United States, Dr. Kuperschmit enrolled as a fellow, then later became chief resident at Georgetown University Hospital, where he remains today as a clinical instructor. Since 1996, he has worked at Metropolitan Surgical Associates in Arlington, Virginia. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Kuperschmit also specializes in the surgical treatment of breast cancer and performs minimally invasive varicose vein surgery. He has privileges at Arlington Hospital; Columbia Reston Hospital in Reston, Virginia; and Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia. Marcelo Kuperschmit donates time to the Arlington Free Clinic.
