Lixin Liu - Professional Summary:
Formerly a graduate research assistant while studying at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Lixin Liu currently serves as Lab Manager for The University of British Columbia’s Wine Research Centre. Previously, as Associate Scientist for BASF Plant Science in Ames, Iowa, Lixin Liu was responsible for the creation of a random mutagenesis library. Using proteomic tools, he analyzed MS/MS data and identified plastid trans-membrane protein. Working on a yield and low phytate project, he undertook the research of patent information. Additionally, he utilized genome walking to identify transgene insertion sites. A well-trained academic, Lixin Liu began his education in China, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Horticulture from Nanjing Agricultural University. He then accepted a position with the Institute of Vegetables and Flowers for the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Beijing, China. In this role, he aided in the ornamental species breeding program, also spending one year in company sales. Lixin Liu earned a Master of Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1999, where he studied plant molecular biology. Next completing a Master of Business Administration at Iowa State University, he graduated in 2002. In his position with the Wine Research Centre, Lixin Liu participates in the University’s Genome Canada and Genome British Columbia projects, in addition to using real-time PCR sequencing and western blot and microscopy in the evaluation of RNAi gene knockout phenotype and fluorescent peptide tagged genes of interest. Lixin Liu oversees the lab’s safety regulations and acts as a liaison to other university departments, as well as outside interests. A resident of Vancouver, British Columbia, Lixin Liu enjoys hiking and playing volleyball. He is a fan of many American writers and enjoys books by Ernest Hemingway, Margaret Mitchell, and Bill Bryson, an American humorist.
