Leon Cort, a professional English football player, was born on September 11, 1979 in Southwark. This defender is of Guyanese origin and has an elder brother, Carl Cort, who is also a footballer.
Leon Cort began his career in football by joining the Dulwich Hamlet Football Club, non-league side, in 1997, and in 1998, he joined the local league club, Millwall. During his stint with Millwall, he went on loan to Forest Green Rovers in 2000, for which he played 12 matches. In the following year, he was loaned out to Stevenage Borough.
After making 9 appearances for Borough, in 2001, Leon Cort moved to Southend United on a free transfer and established himself as a regular member of the club. He accomplished an exceptional feat by appearing in 130 consecutive league matches without missing any due to injury or suspension and went on to play a total of 137 matches, netting 11 times.
In the summer of 2004, Leon Cort moved to Hull City on a free transfer. In that year Hull City was promoted to the Football League Championship, in which he played remarkably well. In 2006, in a clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers, the club for which his brother Carl was playing at the time, Leon Cort scored a goal for Hull City while Carl went on to make a goal for his club.
After making 86 appearances and netting 10 goals, he moved to Crystal Palace. Peter Taylor, who ended his three-and-a-half year tenure at Hull City to become the new manager of Crystal Palace, picked Leon Cort as his first signing in 2006, and sent him back to South London, where his impressive performances made him popular with Palace fans. By the end of the season, Leon Cort won the Crystal Palace’s Player of the Season. He played his final match for Crystal Palace against Stoke City at Selhurst Park. He made 49 appearances scoring 8 times during his tenure with the club.
Leon Cort initially moved on loan to Stoke City in 2007 but completed his move to the club in 2008 after signing for a record fee of £1.2 million. He made a good start with his new club at the Britannia Stadium, the home of the Stoke City F.C. As of August 2008, Leon Cort has amassed 8 goals in 34 matches, within a span of just six months with the club.
