Learned Jeremiah Hand’s Early Professional Experiences
A native of Pasadena, Calif., Learned Jeremiah Hand made early inroads in his career as a vice president at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, where Learned Jeremiah Hand represented and advised both retail and institutional clients from 1994 to 1999.
From January 2000 until March 2004, Learned Jeremiah Hand was executive director for the Kenneth S. Warren Institute, (KSWI) a 501c3 non-profit medical research institute. Learned Jeremiah Hand initiated the commercialization process for some of the intellectual property owned by KSWI. Learned Jeremiah Hand also expanded the organization from five to 35 full-time scientific and administrative employees and negotiated the purchase of a 15-acre research campus. Learned Jeremiah Hand oversaw the modernization of a 15,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art laboratory facility, including the construction of an animal facility; and, in addition, Learned Jeremiah Hand acted as a public relations liaison between KSWI and the county and town legislators.
Learned Jeremiah Hand’s Entrepreneurial Presence in Business and Commerce
In 2001, Learned Jeremiah Hand co-founded the Kenneth S. Warren Institute, a medical research center dedicated to facilitate the discovery and development of new therapeutics to alleviate health problems.
As executive director, Learned Jeremiah Hand spearheaded major renovations to make the building oil-free. At the time, Learned Jeremiah Hand said, “Our eventual goal is to be totally oil free, but no matter how green a building is, when it’s 5 degrees outside, you want some backup oil.”
In 2003, Learned Jeremiah Hand founded Wellstone Filters, a company that provides premium, 100 percent tobacco with proprietary filters that remove some toxins in cigarette smoke while also improving the cigarette's flavor. Learned Jeremiah Hand says, “People will buy it for the price and come back for the taste.”
Learned Jeremiah Hand, who also serves as chief executive officer at Wellstone, which he moved from New York to Timberlake, N.C., continues, “We're a growth company in a declining industry. We're filling a need in a market niche that has been neglected, which is a very good cigarette at a value price.”
Learned Jeremiah Hand estimates that small manufacturers now hold 12 percent of the U.S. market.
