Lakshman Achuthan holds responsibilities as Chief Operations Officer of the Economic Cycle Research Institute (ECRI), a New York firm he helped establish in 1996. Serving as a company spokesperson, Lakshman Achuthan leads forecasting activities focused on the world’s major market economies. He and his associates emphasize an objective and detailed methodology of pinpointing inflation and economic cycle turning points. The Weekly Leading Index (WLI) product is distinguished as the only index of its type that has accurately predicted the past three U.S. recessions.

Lakshman Achuthan developed the foundations that inform his ECRI endeavors while he was a researcher at the Columbia University Center for International Business Cycle Research (CIBCR). Alongside ECRI’s Chief Research Officer Anirvan Banerji, he worked as a protégé of Geoffrey H. Moore at the Center from 1991 to 1996, developing global forecasting models. With more than a half-century of economic expertise, the late Dr. Moore notably co-developed the U.S. Commerce Department’s Index of Leading Economic Indicators in the 1960s. Upon leaving CIBCR, Dr. Moore and his two research associates collaboratively founded the Economic Cycle Research Institute.

ECRI has developed more than 100 proprietary cyclical indexes spanning the globe. In addition to its regularly updated index products, the firm’s economic researchers provide clients with in-depth reports on topics such as employment, credit, inflation, and cyclical shifts in major economies from China to the United States.

Mr. Achuthan serves on a number of advisory boards and panels, including those of the Putney School in Vermont, and the NYC Office of Management and Budget. Lakshman Achuthan additionally sits on the Board of Governors for the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College, a nonpartisan and nonprofit public-policy research group.
