About Kenny Troutt

Kenny Troutt is an American billionaire who made his fortune in the communications industry.

Kenny Troutt’s Early Life

Troutt was born in 1948 in Illinois, USA. Since he was the son of a local bartender, he was raised in one of the public housing facilities at Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was raised mostly by his mother, Nadine Adams, since he never got along with his father. However, Kenny Troutt never minded working hard to go up in life. He played football for a year at Eastern Illinois University and then transferred to Southern Illinois. He worked on a construction job to in order to complete his studies at the Southern Illinois University, to gain his degree in Bachelor of Arts / Science.

Kenny Troutt – Founder of Excel Communications

In 1988, Kenny Troutt founded the Texas-based telecommunications company called Excel Communications. The company had nothing very original to offer as it was the 432nd largest company in America offering long-distance communication service as its main product. But what ultimately mattered was that, in seven years, it made its way to the top and became the 4th largest long distance carrier in America and the youngest billion-dollar-annual company in history. It set another record when it became the youngest company to join the New York Stock Exchange in 1996. Kenny Troutt acquired the Telco Communications Group in 1997 and expanded his business further.

In 1998, Kenny Troutt sold Excel Communications to Teleglobe for $3.5 billion. It was this move that led him to the Forbes List of Billionaires. Teleglobe is now a part of Tata Communications.

Kenny Troutt – the Texan Entrepreneur & Sports Enthusiast

After selling Excel Communications, Kenny Troutt reinvested his newfound wealth in stocks, bonds, and horses. In 2000, he purchased Prestonwood Farm, a horse breeding and racing farm in Kentucky, and renamed it as Winstar Farm. Trout’s interest in horses led him to initiating the White Horse Award which is given to a racing or farm worker who has performed a heroic act for a horse or human through the Racetrack Chaplaincy of America.

Kenny Troutt is also on the Board of Directors of the Breeder’s Cup which promotes international horse racing and a trustee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA).

Troutt supports two youth basketball teams of Dallas, one for fifth-graders and the other for third-graders. Both teams are named the Texas Titans. Apart from financial backing, Troutt provides moral support as well as high-quality coaching and training for the teams.

Kenny Troutt – His Family

With so much passion and enthusiasm for the game of basketball, it is not surprising to see that Troutt’s two sons are players on his two teams of Texas Titans. Troutt’s wife, Lisa Troutt, accompanies him on his trips with the Texas Titans as they fly around the nation. Their residence is a 13,000 square-foot mansion at Dallas.

Kenny Troutt is the Chief Executive Officer of his family-owned company, Mount Vernon Investments Inc.
