About Kateri Carmola

A recognized expert in political theory and global security issues, Kateri Carmola, PhD, possesses an accomplished background in her field. Her 2010 book, Private Security Contractors in the Age of New Wars: Risk, Law & Ethics, addresses the prevalence of private military contractors as well as the legal and ethical issues surrounding their use.

Now a visiting research scholar at Vermont’s Middlebury College, Kateri Carmola previously taught courses in political philosophy and warfare at the institution. Her teaching and writing work centers on humanitarian law, international security, and the laws of war. Published in multiple journals and books, she delves into the cultures of the military and private contractors. Kateri Carmola’s current work focuses on counterinsurgency warfare in the military and the theories behind its use.

Outside of writing and teaching, her expertise garners her frequent invitations to attend events held within the United States and abroad. Ms. Carmola’s many speaking engagements include events held at Tufts University, Harvard Law School, Georgetown University, Dartmouth University, and the Institute for International Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, among others.

In 2006, Kateri Carmola spoke at the Africa Center for Strategic Studies at National Defense University. The U.S. Department of Defense program for African military officers sponsored the event. Two years later, she gave testimony as an invited expert at the United Nations headquarters for the UN Working Group on Mercenaries.

Ms. Carmola’s multiple presentations and speaking engagements include those held by the American Bar Association, Princeton Project on National Security, International Studies Association, American Political Science Association, World International Studies Association, and the Carnegie Council for Ethics and International Affairs. In addition, Kateri Carmola attended events around the world in Beirut, Germany, Austria, Stockholm, Istanbul, Montreal, and the United Kingdom.
