About Julia Powell
Julia Powell - Professional Summary:
A writer, artist, athlete, and lawyer, Julia Powell became a full-time novelist in January 2010 after working in the field of law for more than two years. She has been writing since 1997 in various roles. At Amherst College, Ms. Powell functioned as a sports writer for the student newspaper. As a student at Yale, she studied writing with PEN/Faulkner-award winning author Robert Stone, and was elected to St. Anthony Hall, an intellectual society. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in History in 2001 and continued seeking experience as a writer through her work for the Cambridge Chronicle in Massachusetts, where she wrote features and profiles and reported on political events. Julia Powell’s work for the Chronicle coincided with her enrollment in a writing workshop with the Nieman Fellowship. Soon after, Ms. Powell enrolled at Stanford Law School and received her Juris Doctor in 2007. At law school, she continued her interest in writing, contributing to the annual Stanford Law School Musical, an event produced, authored, and presented by law school students and staff. Julia Powell also combined her interest in law with her editorial and writing skills as an editor for the Stanford Law Review.
Ms. Powell’s diverse work experiences have taken her to various places in America and across the globe. She functioned as a cook in Mexico and on a cattle ranch in Patagonia, South America, using the opportunity to improve her Spanish. She also utilized her linguistic skills as a volunteer tutor for immigrant youth with the “I Have A Dream” Foundation. The athletic skills that Julia Powell honed at Yale as the captain for two intramural sports teams earned her a job as an Assistant Coach for the girls varsity soccer team at the Buckingham Browne & Nichols day school in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She also coached the girls junior varsity soccer team at the school.
Currently, Julia Powell works toward the completion of her first novel. An accomplished painter, Ms. Powell also accepts watercolor commissions.
