Military and Family Life Consultant

US Military

05/1/2009 — Present

As a Military and Family Life Consultant, I work in the position of a contractor to the US Military. I, along with dozens of other licensed psychologists, social workers and psychotherapists, work to support all branches of the US military and their family members. We are a supplement to the military's existing mental health workers. Since the US is currently involved in 2 wars our services are crucial to the military and their family members in the US and around the world at this time. I am usually assigned to a 45 or 60 day tour on or near a military base anywhere in the world. My mission is to help problem solve and provide and work with behavioral plans to assist with all kinds of issues this population faces. The issues range from marital problems, stress management, work-related conflicts, parenting skills, etc. All daily life issues that people must deal with plus the extra stressors that military families must face having to do multiple deployments.

My responsibilities include an understanding of the nature of each branch of the military, learning the rank structure, making sure everyone on my assignment is aware of the program and feels comfortable using the services. As a licensed psychotherapist in the State of California my responsibility is to provide as much support and consultation as possible to the soldiers and their families during the duration of my assignment. I see individuals, couples and families. I also give briefings about the program as well as presentations when needed on various topics such as conflict resolution, stress management and communications skills.

I find that this position is rewarding in and of itself. After each assignment, I realize there were challenges, but I also know that I may have made a difference. It always feels deeply satisfying. In this position I have received one official US Army commendation after an assignment.
