Judge John Donovan - Professional Summary:   

 

Licensed by the State Bar of Texas in 1985, Judge John Donovan currently serves as the presiding Judge of the 113th District Court of Harris County, Texas. Judge Donovan has received numerous endorsements over the years from a wide array of organizations. To this end, the Houston Police Officers Union, the Harris County Deputies Organization, the Houston Professional Firefighters Association Local 341, the Mexican American Sheriffs Organization, the C Club, and the Houston Realty Business Coalition have all voiced their support for Judge John Donovan in 2010. Further highlighting his career, P.O.L.I.C.E., Inc. bestowed its prestigious Judge of the Year award on Judge Donovan in 1998 and 2008. He also earned distinction as Judge of the Year from the Houston Police Officers’ Union, Local 2 in 2000.

Before he became the presiding Judge of the 113th District Court in January 2011, Judge John Donovan was the presiding Judge of the 61st District Court of Harris County. He was elected to this bench in November 1996 and served there until 2008. He was Chairman of the Special Dockets Committee from 2002 to 2008 while Judge of the 61st District Court. He also was the presiding judge of 4870 silicone implant cases during this time. Later, Judge Donovan became the Director of Judicial and Legal Issues for Harris County Judge Ed Emmett in 2009 and 2010. In this capacity, he assisted resolving judicial and legal issues for the citizens of Harris County. He was certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in 1992.

Judge John Donovan was a litigator for the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee, Houston Subcommittee of the State Bar of Texas early in his career. Moreover, Judge Donovan was on the Houston Bar Association’s Continuing Legal Education Committee for two years. He also was a member of the Criminal Justice Advisory Panel, Houston-Galveston Area Council in 2009 and 2010. Judge John Donovan and his wife Denise have four sons. He resides in Houston, Texas.
