About Joseph Zengerle
Joseph Zengerle - Professional Summary: Combining his interest in law with his commitment to public service, Joseph Zengerle teaches in the area of National and Homeland Security Studies at George Mason University School of Law. Here he founded the Clinic for Legal Assistance to Servicemembers and led the only brief amicus curiae in the United States Supreme Court from a law school, advocating in favor of recruitment on law school campuses by officers of the Judge Advocate General’s Corps.. Prior to joining the faculty at George Mason University School of Law, Joseph Zengerle was the Executive Director of The Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia, a non-profit organization providing free civil legal services to underprivileged populations unable to afford an attorney. Between clerkships and various federal appointments earlier in his career, Joseph Zengerle engaged in a substantial amount of pro bono legal services for clients in need. Beyond his professional duties, Joseph Zengerle is active in civic leadership, co-founding HelpToHelp and the Council of Vietnam Veterans, acting as a co-chair of the Swarthmore College Parents Council, functioning as Chairman of the Board for the Emeritus Foundation and the Agent Orange Settlement Foundation, and serving as National Commander for the Disabled American Veterans. Joseph Zengerle serves on the advisory board for the John Marshall Law School Veterans Legal Support Center & Clinic, and previously served in advisory capacities on the Rules Advisory Committees for the United States Court of Federal Claims and the United States Court of Veterans Appeals, the National Sponsoring Committee for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Standing Committee on Pro Bono Legal Services for the District of Columbia Circuit.. Joseph Zengerle graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science degree before several military assignments during the Vietnam War. Upon returning to the United States and civilian life, Joseph Zengerle attended the University of Michigan Law School, where he worked as a Note and Comment editor for the Michigan Law Review. Joseph Zengerle earned his Juris Doctor degree from the institution and graduated magna cum laude.
