Joseph Prewitt Diaz - Professional Summary:    Dr. Joseph O. Prewitt Diaz, a native of Cayey, volunteers with the Puerto Rico Chapter of the American Red Cross, where he serves as the Disaster Mental Health Officer. Recently, he has served as Contractor with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance; the International Services of the American Red Cross-Jakarta, Indonesia; and as a consultant to the Disaster and Law Center, University of Puerto Rico. Joseph Prewitt Diaz holds a PhD in Psychology and an MS in Pastoral Psychology and Spiritual Development. As a W.K. Kellogg Fellow, Diaz has lectured at the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil and the University of Illumine, Argentina. As a Woodrow Wilson Hispanic Fellow at Princeton University, he conducted research into the psychological needs of Puerto Rican migrants. Most recently, he was a Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Psychology, the University of Indonesia, where he lectured on disaster psychology. Joseph Prewitt Diaz has held faculty rank at the University of Puerto Rico; Pennsylvania State University; University of Connecticut; Baptist Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; the Medical School of the Autonomous University of Honduras; and in the Graduate Program in Pastoral Counseling at Neumann College in Ashton, Pennsylvania. Joseph Prewitt Diaz has been awarded many honors and awards: Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Voluntarism, the National Education Association Civil Rights Leadership Award, the Lifesaving Award and the Tiffany Award by the American Red Cross, and the International Humanitarian Award from the American Psychological Association. Joseph Prewitt Diaz is one of leading world experts in disaster mental health and psychosocial support, having organized programs in Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, India, Nepal, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Sri Lanka Among 397 referred publications are: (1) The role of the counselor in alleviating acculturative stress in Hispanic children and youth during a natural disaster, (2) Stressors in Puerto Rican children as a result of Hurricane Georges, (3) Words to Action: pictorial contextualization of the IASC Guidelines on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Emergency Settings (with Dayal, A.), and (4) From “root shock” to community and school reconstruction: A psychosocial support model. He has authored and co-authored 37 books or chapters of books. In Central America, (1) Guía Metodologica: Diplomado para Interventores en Crisis (Prewitt Díaz, Escorcia Delgadillo, & González Flores, 2002), (2) Apoyo psicosocial en desastres: Un modelo para Guatemala (Prewitt Díaz, 2002), (3) Primeros Auxilios Psicológicos (Prewitt Díaz, 2001), and (4) Salud psicosocial en un desastre complejo: El efecto del Huracán Mitch en Nicaragua. (Prewitt Díaz, and Savallos, 2000). In India, he has co-edited two books (Laranayana and Murthy), entitled “Disaster Mental Health in India” (2004) and Advances in Disaster Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (2006).
