About Jonathan Grounds

Jonathan Grounds is an English footballer born on February 2, 1988 in Thornaby-on-Tees. Though he is primarily a full-back, this versatile player, can also play at centre-back or on the left side of the midfield.

Jonathan Grounds represented the St Patrick's School in Thornaby before joining the Middlesbrough Academy as a youth player. He was a part of the team that won the Nike Cup in Sunderland, as well as that which played the international finals in Portland, Oregon. Jonathan Grounds knocked off the 2007-08 season as the captain of the reserve team of the club. Following his brilliant performance, Middlesbrough signed a one-year deal with him in the summer of 2007 and included him in the first team for its pre-season trip to Austria.

Having won the confidence of the club’ manager, Gareth Southgate, Jonathan Grounds made his debut for Middlesbrough at the Premier League in the match against Liverpool on January 12, 2008. His exceptional performances during the season fetched him a new two-year deal with the club in March that year. He celebrated the signing with a man-of-the-performance in the match against Sunderland, in which he scored a goal to help Middlesbrough’s reserve team emerge triumphant.

On September 1, 2008 Jonathan Grounds went to Norwich City on a three-month loan.
