Jonathan Greening is an English midfielder, who was born on January 2, 1979, in Scarborough. He prefers to play as an attacking left-sided midfielder, but he can also play in central positions.


Jonathan Greening entered the international arena by representing the England Under-21 team. He played for the team in seventeen matches and has three goals to his credit. He was called-up to represent the senior England squad during the 2002-03 season, but he did not play for the team.
Jonathan Greening began his football career with York City towards the end of the 1996-97 season. He was instrumental in helping his club to maintain its place in the Division Two. On March 26, 1998, he was signed by Manchester United and he was a part of the squad that won the United European Football Association (UEFA) Champions League in 1999.


Jonathan Greening signed a new contract with the United at the end of the 1999-2000 season, before moving to Middlesbrough in the summer of 2001 in order to become a regular player. Jonathan Greening along with Mark Wilson, his former club teammate, joined Middlesbrough for a combined fee of £3 million. He was voted the ‘Club Player of the Year’ during the 2002-03 season. After spending three seasons at Middlesbrough, Jonathan Greening signed a contract with West Bromwich Albion for an initial fee of £1.25 million. He debuted for the club in the first match of the 2004-05 Premiership season against Blackburn Rovers, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Jonathan Greening became a potential midfielder and played a crucial role in the Premiership survival battle. He played 125 games in the first three years with Albion and subsequently, renewed his contract for another three years in 2007. He was made the captain of the West Bromwich Albion’s team during the 2007-08 season and his impressive performances earned him a name in the Championship Team of the Week on several occasions. Jonathan Greening played in all forty six league matches and eight of the Football Association (FA) cup games. He captained the Albion team, which emerged victorious at the Football League Championship 2008. Jonathan Greening was selected to be a part of the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Championship Team of the Year along with teammates, Paul Robinson and Kevin Phillips.
