Maestro Joel Revzen’s career as a conductor of operas and symphonies enables him to perform across the globe with professional musical groups in the Czech Republic, France, Italy, England, Russia, and elsewhere. His guest conductor appearances include performances with France’s l’Orchestre National de Lyon, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Joel Revzen’s many recorded appearances include two albums of Haydn’s The Seasons and The Creation, performed with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra; a guest conductorship with the Moscow Symphony for Mendelssohn’s Double Concerto; and his work as a pianist and conductor for the Grammy Award-winning album The Art of Arleen Augér.
Joel Revzen’s career brought him to Phoenix in 2003 when he joined the Arizona Opera as General and Artistic Director as well as Principal Conductor. He plans to lead performances of Faust and other works during the 2011-2012 season. Before becoming involved with the Arizona Opera, he worked with Minnesota’s Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra; New York’s Metropolitan Opera; Colorado’s Aspen Music Festival; and elsewhere. From 1972 to 1984, Joel Revzen filled the position of Dean at the St. Louis Conservatory of Music in Missouri, boosting enrollment from 11 to 120 and increasing the original annual budget of $50,000 by more than 50 times that amount.
An active supporter of several charities, Joel Revzen contributes to Smile Train, a nonprofit organization providing children throughout the world with access to treatment for clefts, and Sojourner Center, a shelter for domestic violence victims in Phoenix. Revzen enjoys horseback riding, sailing, and skiing.
