Motorcycle racing is a very physically demanding sport; it is imperative that Joel Mertes stays in top physical condition to participate. With a background of baseball, football, basketball, and gymnastics, he has a solid background in staying fit. These days, despite a busy schedule, Joel Mertes also manages to find time to participate in several men’s soft pitch softball leagues in the area. Joel Mertes has been riding dirt bikes since 1996, but in 2007, he became serious about the sport and won third in his class, 250 A, at the end of the enduro season. In 2008, Joel Mertes finished second in the same class, and in 2009, he won his Vet A class in both Iowa and Indiana, and for overall points. In 2010, Joel Mertes finished several races in the Top 10, won his class in enduros and hare scrambles, and won his class 250 A for the year. He looks forward to riding in the AA or Pro Class for the 2011 enduro season. When Joel Mertes isn’t working or riding, he likes to read. Authors such as Glenn Beck, Richard Marcinko, and Vince Flynn capture his interest, and his favorite reads include Act of Treason, Extreme Measures, Rogue Warrior, and The Overton Window.
