I have flexible leadership and people skills. I have attended an intensive middle management long course (three months full time) in the past and as an experienced manager and leader I can motivate colleagues. I have done this by developing the profile of the team, encouraging team members to build on their existing strengths and take on new challenges. I did this in the commercial world where I turned around a failing distribution system by motivating the Team to adopt a shared vision. I have successfully applied similar principles that require development planning and use of data. I have the knowledge and skill to extract that data into meaningful information as a department head in an inner city secondary school. In addition I was responsible for data capture and analysis in the Army and in the commercial world as well as using various Management Information Systems (MIS). I have been working for the MoD teaching Information Management (IM) because I had to skills and experience to quickly adapt to a new challenge.

Self employed. Cornwall. Property developer.

Defence Academy - College of Management and Technology, Shrivenham, Wilts. SO2 - Information Management Training and Education. I was head hunted by an agency to undertake a short term contract developing teaching and learning materials. I used a VLE (moodle) and other tools (classified) to teach aspects of Information Management (IM), covering the Information Assurance (IA), legal framework and maturity models that complied with government policies and pan governmental strategies. This, by its very nature, also encompasses organisational cultural change and Business Continuity Management (BCM). As well as lecturing I also developed on line material using MOODLE for the Defence Learning Portal. The material is aimed at mangers up to board level.

 

Self employed. Cornwall. Property developer. Conversion of a restaurant (which had failed as a going concern) into separate dwellings. Plus the remodelling of my current house. In addition undertook a part time course in traditional building techniques involving renovation and design as both building have parts that are over 200 years old.

St Michael and All Angels Church of England Academy. (Previously known as Archbishop Michael Ramsey Technology College until September 2007.) Southwark, London. Head of Business Studies and Enterprise.
Main roles include:
Supervision and management performance of department staff and student teachers. Maintenance of subject knowledge for all department staff. Liaison with exams officer and exam boards. Introduction of new courses for students at key stage 4 and 5 and maintained Schemes of Work. Teaching Business, Public Services and ICT to GCSE/BTEC and A level. Development, planning and use of data. Inputting data to the MIS and analysis, interpretation of information. Target setting, monitoring and assessment (AfL) with colleagues and students. 6th form tutor for both year 12 and 13 giving University and careers advice. Overseeing entrepreneurial activities, Young Enterprise, NFTE and various social enterprises being run by the 6th form and other groups. Whole school Enterprise education especially year 9. Liaison with business. A member of the Behaviour for Learning steering group, Health and Safety Committee and Consultative management/union committee. Prior to being an Academy I was a member of the staff association that met with the incoming Executive Principal and a teacher Governor.

 

John Kitto Community College. Plymouth, Devon. Business Studies and Economics, Law and ICT teacher. In addition to my teaching subjects I gave classroom support or extracted statemented pupils in years 8 and 9 in some modern languages and humanities lessons. Teaching over the 3 years included years 12 and 13 Economics and Business AS and A2, Business Studies AVCE, Travel and Tourism AVCE, ICT GNVQ (I) and AS Law, years 10 and 11 Business Studies at GCSE and GNVQ Intermediate and Foundation levels, Key Skills for 6th form and NC key stage 3 IT for years 7, 8and 9. In addition I delivered literacy Catch up unit to selected year 7 pupils. I was a lower school tutor. I have written a Finance Unit scheme of work complete with all teaching aids and internet links for the Business AVCE. Whole school activities included being a member of a pastoral review committee and computerisation of reports. I also ran a popular lunchtime computer games club and assist in running an after school climbing club.

Great Baddow High School, Chelmsford, Essex. Second in Business Studies Department. I taught Years 12 and 13 ‘A' level Business Studies OCR modular course. Last year the results had an added valve of 1.5 with half the group achieving a grade A or B. At GCSE I taught Business Studies with IT option and Office Applications; all groups were mixed ability; these courses became over subscribed. I was responsible for co-ordinating GCSE Office Application course and RSA keyboard skills. I also taught year 12/13 group General Studies A/AS level and years 7, 8 and 9 NC key stage 3 IT. I wrote the scheme of work for Office Applications and some of the new AS. In addition I was a form tutor from year 9 to 11.

 

Launceston College, Launceston, Cornwall. Business Studies and ICT teacher. I provided the school breathing space, stepping in to cover the vacancy caused by the untimely death of the Head of Business Studies. I taught GNVQ(A) and GNVQ(I) Business Studies including IT and Communications key skills. Also Information Studies for years 10 and 11.

 

University of Plymouth. Student. Mental health nursing. Academic subjects of biology, sociology, psychology and nursing theory and practical placement in a mental health facility.

 

Supply Teaching. Falmouth Community School including Falmouth and Penryn FE College, Falmouth, Cornwall - Business Studies/IT and Law teacher. I covered the position of the Head of Business Studies which arose due to long term illness. This necessitated taking on the full responsibilities of Head of Department. I taught GNVQ(A) Leisure and Tourism, GNVQ(A) Business Studies GNVQ(I) IT application of numbers and a one year GCSE Law course at post compulsory age including adults. I also taught years 10 and 11 GCSE Business Studies with IT option. For all courses I organised visits and practical activities.

 

University of Greenwich, Student. Law degree followed by a PGCE in Business Studies. For my teaching practice at Penwith College, I taught GCSE law to a 1 year BTEC Public Service course, GNVQ(A) Business Studies and ‘A' level Business Studies including IT.

 

Territorial Army. Officer. 6 Bn (V) The Light Infantry. Platoon Commander. In 1993 transferred to 3 Military Intelligence Bn (V) where I had an interesting time as an Intelligence Officer.

 

Self employed. Cornwall. Business Analyst and Financial Consultant. With clients I identified their strengths and weaknesses by studying the business activity, making a financial appraisal, assessing the personnel and information systems. This included adapting operational and strategic business theory to practical solutions for small business.

 

Independent Consulting and Management Company Ltd. Business Analyst. Working with SME companies throughout the UK, I carried out diagnostic studies of the client company in order to identify problems and their causes, and advised on the implementation of remedies.

 

Redland Roof Tiles Ltd. Warehousing Manager. I was responsible for all distribution and warehousing activities of manufactured and imported products via road and rail. I completely reorganised working practices, implementing change with the co-operation of my teams. This achieved higher productivity within three months, within a climate of falling markets and tight central budgetary control.

Assistant Customer Service Manager. Operational responsibilities for co-ordinating tele-sales, vehicle fleet and stock control. I streamlined administration procedures in the department in order to comply with ISO 9002.

HM Forces. Army Officer. Royal Army Ordnance Corps:

 

Middle and senior management positions (at operational and strategic level) with the Royal Marines. Apart from command appointments, roles included project manager for major UK trial giving presentations to high-ranking government officials and Senior Navy, Marine and Army Officers, liaison with other UK and foreign (host nation) agencies and co-ordinating with other Units and Commands. Army and Royal Marine personnel management including administration and security. Budgetary control and supervisor of various accounts using computer and manual systems.

Military Personnel Manager in UK Depot. Responsibilities included administration of the unit, discipline, military training and specialist trade training courses (NVQ).

Company Training Officer in a unit in BAOR. Responsible for regimental and trade training.

Platoon Commander at the Corps Training Centre. Basic training of adult recruits. Age 18 -27.
