About Jen Hsun Huang

Background and education


Jen-Hsun Hang was born on February 17, 1963 in Taipei, Taiwan. His father worked as an engineer in chemical and instrumentation, and his mother stayed at home making an effort to teach her children English without speaking it herself. The family moved to Thailand and was caught up in political upheaval, so Jen-Hsun (age nine) and his brother where sent off to relatives in Tacoma, Washington, USA. He was erroneously enlisted to Onaida Baptist Institute in Kentucky Tennessee - a Christian boarding school for “difficult children”. Later rejoining his parents he attended the local “Aloha High School” in Portland Oregon.

From there he transferred to Oregon State University and graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering. Completing his higher education at Stanford University in California, where in 1992 he acquired the MS.c in Electrical Engineering.

 

Career

 

Jen-Hsun Huang started his professional career in 1985 as an employee at the LSI Logic Corporation, holding various positions. His last position was Director of Core ware.

In addition (1984 to 1985) he worked as a Microprocessor Designer for Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD).

In 1993 he became Co-founder of the NVIDA Corporation which he lead as Director, Chief Executive and Member of the Board to extraordinary success becoming one of the largest developers of the semiconductor industry and making NVIDA a world leader in programmable graphics processing technologies.

Under his management NVIDA is listed by Fortune as one of the “Fastest growing companies” as well as one of the Top 40 of the “Wired Magazine”.

The past years Jen-Hsun Huang received numeral awards among them:

  • Entrepreneur of the Year in High Technology 1999 by Ernst and Young LLP.
  • Dr. Morris Award for Exemplary Leadership the of the Semiconductor Association, 2004.
  • Honorary Doctorate the from Oregon State University, 2009.
  • 2007 as leader of NVIADA, honoured with the Forbes “Company of the Year” and the “"Entrepreneurial Company of the Year" through Stanford Business School.

Since 1999 Mr. Huang is a Trustee of The RAND Corporation, a non-profit Institution founded 1948 providing information through research, analysis and counselling to improve decision making of governments in a wide range of fields from national security, international affairs and law to education, health, environment and business.

At the 2011 CES International (Consumer Technology Association), the world's largest tradeshow promoting consumer technology , Jen-Hsun Huang, as the CEO of NVIDA proclaimed a “Revolution in Computing” when he presented the company’s “Denver Project” to the public announcing this years breakthrough, hopefully transforming mobile phones into Super-phones with the companies microprocessor Tegra-2.

It is of no surprise that the man who once said “Where the pixel is, is where we are” sparked euphoria reflecting the dedication and success of his own life.

 

Personal life


Jen-Hsun Huang is married and has two children. He and his wife Lori met as technical training partners at the Oregon University staying close companions beyond bits and bytes to this day.

His visions are based on guidelines as “You have a question: Ask. You have a problem: Inquire. You do not know: Learn”.

“It is more important to always give your best than be the best”.
