Jeff Marque - Professional Summary:
A physicist and teacher who lives in San Mateo, California, Jeff Marque has loved music all his life. He began playing the violin in his youth. By the time he entered Reed College in Portland, Oregon, to study physics, he played well enough to attain the position of Concertmaster of the school's orchestra. Jeff Marque completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley, which awarded him a Bachelor's degree in the Individual Major in Physics & Biology.
Fresh out of college, Jeff Marque divided his time between employment as a biomedical technician (first in clinical cardiology, and then in neurosurgical anesthesia research) and playing first violin in a string quartet. In 1975, he received a full tuition scholarship to study chamber music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He entered the physics graduate program at San Francisco State University (SFSU) during the same fall term semester. The following spring, Mr. Marque decided to forgo music studies in favor of a Master's degree in Physics, which he received from SFSU a year later. In addition to his love of music, one other legacy of his musical career in San Francisco remains: Jeff Marque married Miyako Oshige, a Japanese student he met at the Conservatory, in 1982.
After Jeff Marque won a grant from the National Science Foundation's U.S. Japan-Cooperative Science Program to pursue post-doctoral biophysics research in Japan, he and his wife lived near Tokyo for a year and a half. They both contributed photographs to a pictorial dictionary of American words, published by the Japanese publisher Gakken. While he worked as a physicist for Beckman Coulter, Inc., and its successor companies, and then as Lead Simulation Engineer for Northrop Grumman Corporation, Jeff Marque continued to play and listen to music. He has given significant ongoing financial support to Old First Concerts, the yearlong musical series hosted by Old First Church in San Francisco.
