About Jason Ide

Jason Ide - Professional Summary:     A lifelong champion of workers’ rights and a rising figure in the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Jason Ide currently serves as President of IBT Local 814 in New York. While an undergraduate at the University of Michigan, Mr. Ide developed an interest in the fair resolution of labor disputes, playing an active role in Students Organizing for Labor and Economic Equality and organizing strikes on behalf of the Lecturers’ Employee Organization, among other groups. Graduating with a degree in Political Science in 2004, Jason Ide soon moved to New York City, where he took a job as an art mover for Sotheby’s auction house. As a result of this work, Mr. Ide became a committed member of IBT Local 814, helping to lead successful contract negotiations with Sotheby’s in his early years with the union. Then, Jason Ide won election to Local 814’s Bargaining Committee, contributed to significant wage and starting-salary increases at Sotheby’s, and repositioned the union as a balanced entity with achievable goals. Elected President of Local 814 in 2010, Mr. Ide, at age 28, became the youngest principal officer in the Teamsters network and immediately set out to restore accountability and stability to his 1,000-member union chapter.

With a focus on better wages and hours, increased healthcare benefits, and legal rights for members of Local 814, Jason Ide launched a multi-tiered campaign to improve working conditions for Sotheby’s art handlers. Following a protracted 10-month union contract battle that led to a lockout of 42 employees, saw daily strikes in front of Sotheby’s Manhattan headquarters, and generated national press and support from Occupy Wall Street, Mr. Ide recently reached a settlement between the union and Sotheby’s, restoring benefits and wages to satisfy all parties.
