About Janet Schlarbaum

Janet Schlarbaum's Biography
Janet Schlarbaum was born Janet Williams in 1941 to a farmer father and a homemaker mother. Janet graduated high school in 1959 and began taking classes at a beauty school in nearby Boise. Following graduation from beauty school, she wed her high school beau, Burt, and the two moved several hours north to the town of White Bird, ID. In White Bird, Janet Schlarbaum opened her own beauty parlor, A Touch of Class. Soon after the salon opened, Janet’s husband Burt was sent to Vietnam. Janet was pregnant with their first child at the time, but she held her own, running the salon and taking care of the baby once he was born. When Burt returned from Vietnam several years later, the Schlarbaums resumed married life and welcomed three more children before the conclusion of the 1960’s. Janet Schlarbaum remained at A Touch of Class, gradually expanding the salon and incorporating other stylists. By the time she retired, A Touch of Class had become more of a local institution than a beauty salon. Janet Schlarbaum met many wonderful friends over the 40-plus years she was proprietor of A Touch of Class, but she retired in 2004 to help care for her great-grandson while her granddaughter attended college, a sacrifice she is proud to have made for her family. In addition to caring for her great-grandson Cason, Janet Schlarbaum leads an active social life. She still sees many of her friends from the salon for their weekly appointment, only now it is free of charge and in her kitchen. She also donates her time, money, and goods to her church, a local women’s shelter, and the local food bank. In her free time, Janet Schlarbaum is an active member of the Red Hat Society and is also a member of a bridge club and a book club. Additionally, she enjoys reading, knitting, quilting, walking, traveling, and raising kittens.
