Jane Fernandes - Professional Summary:   

The recipient of numerous honors for her academic performance and professional achievements, Jane K. Fernandes brings a rich career history to her work as Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (Chief Academic Officer) and Provost at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. In December 2006, Jane K. Fernandes won a Senior Fellowship from the Greensboro, North Carolina-based Johnnetta B. Cole Global Diversity and Inclusion Institute, where she currently takes part in a variety of initiatives to promote diversity in the workplace. Since joining the Johnnetta B. Cole Global Diversity and Inclusion Institute, Jane K. Fernandes has delivered multiple keynote speeches, including “Get on Board!” at the United Way Inclusion Roundtable in San Francisco and “Many Ways to Be Deaf” at the Chief Diversity Officer’s Forum.

 

As an undergraduate at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, Jane K. Fernandes won the John Curtis Underwood ’96 Memorial Prize in Poetry and the Comparative Literature Book Prize. Following graduation, Jane K. Fernandes enrolled in the M.A. and subsequently the Ph.D. programs in Comparative Literature at the University of Iowa and continued to build on her impressive academic record with three graduate fellowships from the Gallaudet University Alumni Association, The Iowa Foundation’s David and Rosalie Braverman Scholarship, the Outstanding Disabled Student award from the Citizen’s Committee, Kappa Kappa Gamma’s Rehabilitation Award, and many other honors from university and civic organizations.

 

Post-college, Jane K. Fernandes has received the Philip G. Hubbard Human Rights Award, was presented the Distinguished Service Award from the Iowa Association of the Deaf, and was named an Outstanding Woman in Communication by Women in Communications, Inc. In the past 20 years, Jane K. Fernandes earned the Alice Cogswell Award from the Gallaudet University Alumni Association for her efforts in the cultural advancement of the deaf community and became an Alumni Fellow of the University of Iowa. In addition, Jane K. Fernandes holds a high degree of proficiency in French and Italian.
