In 2007, James Tomkins got a call to represent the England U-19 side. He played a major role by helping his team reach the Under-19 Euro Championship, which was held in Czech Republic in July 2008. As of 2008, James Tomkins has won a total of 8 international caps for the U-19 side, scoring two goals.
James Tomkins began his football career as a defender with the youth academy at West Ham United football club. During the 2006-07 season, he was
promoted to the senior side of the club and helped his team in a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur. With an impressive performance, he got the attention of West Ham United manager, Alan Curbishley. He was selected for squad in the club’s away match against Arsenal and home match against Blackburn Rovers that held on March 15, 2008. On March 22, 2008, James Tomkins made his first team debut for the club and was on the field for the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw against Everton. At the end of the season, he has made five starts for the side and one substitute appearance. During the 2007-08 season, James Tomkins extended his tenure at this club by signing a new long-term contract that keeps him in the club until 2011.
James Tomkins believes that he would not have reached this level in football without his parents support and encouragement. He admires Teddy Sheringham, a fellow teammate in a testimonial match and Carlos Tevez, with whom he had an opportunity to be trained. He enjoys holidaying at Turkey with his family during his spare time.
