James Parla holds a Doctor of Education from Columbia University and an MBA from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. A frequent panelist and speaker on educational topics, James Parla has expertise in topics such as school finance, curriculum development, and careers in education.

In 2012, James Parla accepted a position as adjunct professor at Columbia University Teachers College. As part of his work there, he established a course for urban education leaders covering capital management, budgeting and enrollment, resource allocation, and management systems. From 2002 to 2008, Dr. Parla served as adjunct professor at Touro College, where he taught theory and practice of school administration, school law, management functions of the school administrator, and school finance.

In addition to his post at Columbia, James Parla has served as superintendent of schools for the Wappingers Central School District in Wappingers Falls, New York, since 2009. Dr. Parla has established a number of key programs for his district, including a curriculum-mapping initiative and a cost-effective plan for a full-day kindergarten program. He also shepherded a complicated budget process, resulting in more than one million dollars in savings for the district.

Prior to joining the Wappingers Central School District, James Parla worked as superintendent of schools for the Island Trees Union Free School District. A past president of the Nassau Country Council of School Superintendents, Dr. Parla was also a member of the advisory committee of the Adelphi University School of Education. Additionally, he worked on the Hofstra University Advisory Council School Business Leader Program. James Parla has permanent certification as a school district administrator and school administrator and supervisor.
