Irene Brennick knows adversity and what it takes to persevere through hard times. Currently Director of Community Services at Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, California, Irene Brennick manages more than 650 volunteers. Her life and work now bear little resemblance to the hard times she endured some 20 years ago. When Irene Brennick’s marriage ended, she faced the daunting task of raising two small children with almost no support. Despite her proud nature, she turned to public assistance and nonprofits for aid. At the same time, she attended California State University, Northridge, and worked part time. In 1994, she earned her Bachelor of Science with honors. No longer on public assistance, Irene Brennick became a public speaker for the United Way of Greater Los Angeles. Her story of perseverance caught the attention of the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Daily News, and other media outlets. Today, Irene Brennick speaks to audiences of all kinds on the importance of giving back, finding one’s purpose, and even welfare reform. In addition, Irene Brennick founded GOALmodels, an interactive speaking program for teens at risk. Under her leadership, the program helped youth achieve positive goals by introducing them to successful people who had personally overcome difficult obstacles. As a facilitator, she fostered an approach that encouraged teens to discuss and explore issues in a non-threatening forum. Recently, Irene Brennick authored the book, Bring Your Audience to Their Feet, which offers tips on public speaking. She believes that anyone can learn to become a great public speaker and deliver inspiring insights to audiences of any size. A supporter of the Hospice of the Conejo and the Hope Fund, Irene Brennick has received numerous awards, including Outstanding Alumni from Pierce College, Mother of the Year from the Sertoma Club, and the Frist Humanitarian Award.
