Ian Walker played at the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) U-20 World Cup Final in 1991. He earned his first cap for England at the senior level in 1996 against Hungary. Ian Walker was also part of the national team at the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He made four international appearances by the end of 2004.

He started his football career as a trainee with Tottenham Hotspur in 1990 and made his debut in August 1992 against Southampton.
