Howard Koff offers a number of solutions for clients who cannot pay all their back taxes. Among these are filing for an offer in compromise from the IRS, which recognizes that a taxpayer does not have the assets to pay his or her back taxes. In these cases, the IRS may agree to settle for less than the total amount of taxes owed. If a client has a steady income but does not have the means to pay off back taxes in their entirety, Mr. Koff may negotiate with tax authorities to arrange payments on an installment plan.
Clients who have experienced hardships, filed for bankruptcy, or lost a home or business may qualify for Currently Not Collectible (CNC) status. When this happens, the IRS and New York State government acknowledge that the back taxes are uncollectible for at least a year because the taxpayer lacks the means to pay.
