Hermann Hreiðarsson is an Icelandic footballer born on July 11, 1974, in Vestmannaeyjar. He plays as a defender, primarily in the left-back position, and occasionally at centre-half. Hermann Hreiðarsson is married to Ragna Lóa Stefánsdóttir, a formal footballer, and lives with his family at Dorset.


Hermann Hreiðarsson was selected for the Iceland national team in 1996, and made his debut as a substitute in a friendly against Cyprus in June that year. He has been a pillar of support for Iceland, and captains the team in the absence of the regular captain, Eiður Smári Guðjohnsen. As of June 2008, he has won 75 caps for the national team and has scored five goals.


Hermann Hreiðarsson kicked off his football career in 1993 at ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar. He made 66 appearances for the club, contributing five goals during his tenure. In 1997, he switched to the English football club, Crystal Palace, following which, he represented the club in 37 games.


After brief stints with Brentford and Wimbledon in the 1998-2000 season, Hermann Hreiðarsson moved onto Ipswich Town in 2000 for £4.5million, a record fee for the club then. During his first season with the club, he helped it win a Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Cup place, owing to its fifth-place finish in the Premiership season. During his three-year association with Ipswich, he made 102 appearances.


In March 2003 Hermann Hreiðarsson signed a three-and-a-half year deal for Charlton Athletic. He made his debut for the club in its match against Manchester City, and thereafter played a crucial role for the club. He represented the team in 132 matches during his tenure.


Hermann Hreiðarsson switched to the English football club, Portsmouth on a two-year contract signed on May 25, 2007. His first goal for the club came in September in its Premiership win over Reading. He was a part of the team that clinched the Football Association (FA) Cup in 2008 defeating Cardiff City 1-0.
As of June 2008, Hermann Hreiðarsson has played in 32 matches and has contributed three goals for Portsmouth.
