About Herbert Teitelbaum

In addition to his dedication to public interest law, veteran courtroom attorney Herbert Teitelbaum has maintained an ongoing leadership role in governmental and community associations. He has served on the Boards of the New York Civil Liberties Union, Riverdale Nature Preservancy, and Berkshire Farm for Youth & Services. Acting in an advisory capacity to the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Mr. Teitelbaum also held the post of Cooperating Counsel to the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc. From 1993 to 1996, as President of the New Israel Fund, Inc., Herbert Teitelbaum advanced the missions of  non-profit Israeli advocacy organizations.


Through his involvement in several prominent legal organizations, Herbert Teitelbaum has demonstrated a similar commitment to his profession. Active in the National Lawyers Committee of the National Conference on Soviet Jewry, he was appointed to the Executive Committee of the organization's Board of Governors for three years and chaired the group’s Lawyers Committee. Moreover, Mr. Teitelbaum has maintained strong ties to the Bar Association of the City of New York where he served as a member of its Committee on the Judiciary Coimmittee and the Committee on Civil Rights. A former Co-Chair and Lecturer at the Practicing Law Institute Program on Federal Civil Rights Litigation, Mr. Teitelbaum also has taught before the New York State Bar Association.


Widely recognized for his victories in the courtroom, Herbert Teitelbaum has spent more than four decades championing equal application of the law. Early in his career, Herbert Teitelbaum served as the first Legal Director of the New York-based Puerto Rican Legal Defense & Education Fund, Inc. During this time, his success in the courtroom shaped local and national laws in the areas of employment, education, voting, and housing. 
In 1977, Herbert Teitelbaum founded a small, independent practice concentrating on civil litigation. Almost 20 years later, Herbert Teitelbaum joined Bryan Cave LLP and Affiliates as Litigation Partner. During his tenure at Bryan Cave, he managed a diverse caseload, led the firm's securities litigation group, and helped to create its pro bono policy. From 2007 to 2009, he served as Executive Director of the New York State Commission on Public Integrity. In 2010, he left the commission to return to private practice, litigating cases pertaining to commercial interests as well as public matters.
