About Henry Swieca

Henry Swieca - Humble Beginnings

Henry Swieca was born to a Polish couple. His parents were Holocaust survivors who emigrated from France to the United States in 1955. Henry Swieca was always fascinated by wartime history since his parents had lived through World War II and often rendered him a first-hand account.

Henry Swieca’s father was an accountant and the family lived at a working-class district in New York, where many German-Jews and other refugees of the Nazi rule had settled. Henry Swieca was a five-year old playing in a park when he met his future business partner Glenn Dubin. They grew up in the same neighborhood and lived a few blocks apart. By the time Henry Swieca was a teenager, he was already working part-time in a book-store where his job was to clean shelves.

In 1976, Henry Swieca’s life took a sad turn when his mother died of a disease. Within a year, even his father expired after a heart attack. After that, Swieca often lived with the Dubins.

Henry Swieca – Education and Early Career

Swieca studied in a private school called the Franklin School on a scholarship. He then did his Bachelor degree at the State University of New York (SUNY), and took up a job at Merrill Lynch as a stock-broker. With the profits he made out of his smart investments, he did his Masters degree at the Columbia University and funded his younger brother’s further studies in medicine.

Henry Swieca later worked as an advisor to investors at Dillon Read & Co. His first successful career stint was at E.F Hutton Co. which he joined in 1984. He specialized in risk allocation and asset management and became the Senior Vice President within a few years.

Henry Swieca and Glenn Dubin – Business Partners

Swieca and Dubin were childhood friends and college roommates, but it did not stop at that. In 1984, they founded Dubin & Swieca, an asset and investment management firm. The firm survived the fall of the 1987 stock market crash after a timely rescue by the Lehmann Brothers Group. But the market crash had taught them many valuable lessons of business. In 1992, they launched a multi-strategy fund business – Highbridge Capital Management.

Henry Swieca – The Success of Highbridge

The skilful management and competence of Henry Swieca and Glenn Dubin was the sole reason why Highbridge Capital Management endured several ups and downs and became a prosperous business. Today, the company, headquartered in New York, has a diverse investment platform. In 2004, a strategic partnership between Highbridge and JP Morgan, a leading firm in financial services, was proposed in which the latter bought 55% stake.

In 2008, when recession hit the nation, Highbridge was one of the firms that had its accounts frozen due to the bankruptcy of the Lehmann Brothers. In 2009, JP Morgan completed its acquisition of Highbridge .

Henry Swieca – Personal Life

It was through his closest friend, Glenn Dubin, that Swieca met his future wife, Estee. The couple has four children. From childhood, Henry Swieca has been a shy person who prefers to work behind the scenes. He vacations with his family at an unfamiliar beach at Long Island near New York. He was a non-athlete in his school days while Dubin was a basketball player in the neighborhood. In fact, Dubin and Swieca are like chalk and cheese. Even in politics, Swieca is a supporter of the Republican Party while Dubin is a staunch backer of the Democratic Party. Swieca donates to several civic and religious causes and is on the executive committee of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
