About Henry Samueli
Early Life/Education
Henry Samueli was born September 20th, 1954 in Buffalo, New York. His parents were Holocaust survivors from Poland, who emigrated destitute to the U.S.
After graduating from Fairfax High School, Samueli went to UCLA and studied Electrical Engineering where he received a BA in 1975, an MA in 1976, and a Ph.D in 1980.
Commercial Business Ventures
While Samueli was at UCLA working as a professor, he co-founded his company Broadcom Corporation, with one of his past students Henry Nicholas, both of whom put up a capital of $5,000. In 1998, Broadcom became a publicly traded company, and it was then that Samueli gave up his position at UCLA. The Department of Electrical Engineering still acknowledges him on the list of faculty.
Samueli and his wife Susan purchased the NHL's Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, a Walt Disney owned Company in June 2005 for $75 million. The acquisition also included Anaheim Arena Management which controls the city-owned Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim. In 2006, it was formally declared that Samueli would be changing the team's name to the Anaheim Ducks and the arena's name to the Honda Center. The team is now reportedly worth $197 million and in 2007; the Ducks won the Stanley Cup Championships.
In June 2008, Samueli was indefinitely suspended as owner by the NHL for pleading guilty to lying to U.S. securities regulators, but this was revoked in 2009 and Samueli was reinstated as owner once again.
Philanthropy
The engineering schools were renamed after Samueli when he donated $30 million to UCLA and $20 million to UC Irvine. In 1999 Samueli funded and founded a Holocaust Memorial Library in the name of his parents which was inaugurated in 2005.
In the medical field, the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of California, Irvine, and the Samueli Institute of Information Biology – all establishments supported by him - deal with research, and identify and promote the most accurate practices in the field of medicine by using both conventional and alternative methods.
In education, Samueli's foundation has given grants to Tarbut V' Torah, Chapman University, Orange County High School of Arts, the Ocean Institute, El Viento, THINK Together, Orangewood's Guardian Scholar Program, KOCE, Hope University and the Discovery Science Center. All with a goal to improve lives through education.
The foundation has also supported The Orangewood Children's Foundation, CASA, Kidworks Hillview Acres, Canyon Acres and other bureaus which offer support to families and foster youth at risk.
