About Gregory Munks
A dedicated civil servant, Sheriff Greg Munks has played a vital role in improving the safety and security of San Mateo County for more than 30 years. Throughout his career, Sheriff Greg Munks has worked in corrections, drug enforcement, domestic violence, homicide investigation, and terrorism prevention. Bringing all of these skills together, along with a strong aptitude for organizational management, Greg Munks was elected Sheriff of San Mateo County in June 2006. Sheriff Greg Munks entered the field of law enforcement as a deputy sheriff in the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. After four years, Sheriff Munks joined the Palo Alto Police Department, where he would remain for the next 12 years. Initially hired as a patrol officer, Sheriff Greg Munks showed impressive professional development, eventually earning the rank of Lieutenant. At this point, Sheriff Munks transferred his considerable abilities into an administrative position as the Department's Human Resources Manager. In this role, Sheriff Greg Munks implemented training programs, bolstered recruitment, and mediated labor relations. Sheriff Munks' impressive managerial abilities allowed him to become Undersheriff of San Mateo County, where he remained until his election to Sheriff. Never content to rest on his laurels, Sheriff Greg Munks supplements his considerable skill set as a member of several prominent state and national law enforcement organizations. Sheriff Munks currently maintains membership in the California State Sheriffs' Association, the California Peace Officers' Association, the California Narcotic Officers' Association, the Western States Sheriffs' Association, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Sheriff Munks also currently serves as the Chair of the Northern California High Intensity Drug Trafficking Program (HIDTA), a federal program designed to limit drug trafficking by collaborating resources between local, state, and national agencies. When not engaged by his professional duties, Sheriff Greg Munks enjoys horseback riding or spending time on the golf course. A loving family man, Sheriff Munks is happily married with four children.
